Photochemical Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticls in the Water Solutions of Polycarboxylic Acids. The Effect of Polymer Template on the Nanoparticle Size and Shape

Abstract

The analysis of the effect of ionization and decarboxylation degrees of different molecular mass poly(acrylic) and poly(methacrylic) acids on the size and shape of nanoparticles produced via photochemical reduction of silver ions bound in polycomplexes is performed. The threshold value of the relative content of carboxylate groups of about 0,7 is found, beyond which macromolecules cooperatively bind silver cations forming stable complexes and photoreduction leads to the formation of spherical metal nanoparticles. Below threshold the affinity of investigated polyelectrolytes to Ag+ ions drops sharply and photoreduction process is accompanied by aggregation of “primary” particles, their subsequent photoinduced coalescence and growth of metal nanorods.
