Phase State Determination of Tween-80–Water Binary Mixtures by IR Spectroscopy

Abstract

IR-spectra (in 4000–600 cm–1 region) of binary mixtures of nonionic surfactant Tween-80 with water are measured under room temperature and on wide variation of composition. The goal of this work is to determine the possibility of application of this technique for estimation the mixture phase state. Changes in region of O–H stretching vibrations, C–H and C–O–C bonds are discovered. Analysis of changes in adsorption band of O–H stretching vibrations (3600–3000 cm–1) allows to establish the stepwise decrease in the water molecule level, which participate in hydrogen bonds. This allows us to suppose the formation of new lyotropic phases, which are stable in concentration range 20–30% (direct) and 40–50% (inverted), with the inversion point near 35% of Tween-80 content. This conclusion is in an agreement with rheological data.
