The thermal stability of collagen in tissues of intervertebral disk

Abstract

The thermal collagen stability of intervertebral disc was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the melting of collagen occurred completely at 62–75°C (DH ~ 60 J×g–1) under heating excised samples of annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus. After heating intact intervertebral disc until 80°C denaturation of collagen was not observed. It was shown that the destruction of proteoglycans in examined tissues has not affect on the collagen stability.
