Application of ion and ion-pair chromatography with mass-spectrometric detection as methods for determination of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and its transformation products

Abstract

The conditions for simultaneous determination of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and its transformation products in aqueous solutions were developed using ion and ion-pair chromatography with electrospray ionization single-quadrupolemass-spectrometry detection. It was shown that up to 7 components can be determined simultaneously with limits of detection in the ppb range. The proposed techniques were applied to analysis of 500 mg/L solutions of UDMH oxidized by atmospheric oxygen. Accumulation of formic acid dimethylhydrazide, 1-methyl-1,2,4-triazole and dimethylamine was demonstrated during 70-day observation period .
Key words: liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry, unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine, transformation products, analysis of aqueous solutions.
