ABSTRACT. The larger fullerenes C76, C78 and C84 were probed in the solid phase fluorination reactions with a number of transition metal fluorides: K2PtF6,,MnF3 and CeF4. Prior to the experiments with the pure higher fullerenes similar reactions were performed on the mixture of higher fullerenes (10% - C60, C70 and 90% - Cn, n>70). The spectra obtained at 700-820 K showed quite a complex mixture of ions in the mass range of 1200-1850. Overall four main products were identified in the mass spectra: C60F36, C70F36,38, C76F26,and C84F32-46. Fluorination of C84 and C76 with K2PtF6 produced correspondingly adducts C84F32-40 and C76F18-34 ( with the main products C84F40 and C76F26). Fluorination with MnF3 showed almost the same distribution of products, the main difference being found in the higher extent of fluorination - in case of C84-fluorides adducts up to C84F48 were found by mass spectrometry.
